Questions & Answers

Below are some common questions that we are asked by visitors to our website. If you have any further comments or suggestions please email.

How did Second Flight get started?
For years Leanne has worked with various organizations involved in Animal Rescue. Throughout her life she had a love for parrots and would often receive calls from people needing to find a home or who were having problems understanding their fine feathered friend. With the support of her family and friends and most importantly her husband she began to register Second Flight in January of 2003. Although it is a new organization Leanne had been doing rescue for quite some time along with many of its members and supporters.

Why do you not have parrots available for adoption listed on your website?
We want to ensure that deciding to add a parrot to your family has been given a lot of thought and that its not a impulse. Once someone applies for adoption they will be invited to join our adoption forum where they will receive up to date information on parrots that are available for adoption. We expect all those who are interested in adoption through our program to send in an application then meet with us in Orillia to co mplete the application process.

Is Second Flight the first Sanctuary in Ontario?
No we are not the first sanctuary in Ontario. There are several individuals that offer sanctuary to parrots. However we were first Organization in Ontario that provides sanctuary to parrots in need, help to parrot owners, and an extensive adoption program and most importantly education to the pu blic. We not only require an adoption application but also visits prior to adoption and afterwards

What should a person expect if they wish to surrender their parrot?
Surrendering a parrot is a hard decision and we understand that. We meet with the owners and discuss if the parrot is suitable for adoption or sanctuary. If the owners wish to remain in contact with us we will be happy to do so. We will send pictures, updates on how the parrot is doing, and more. We are happy to provide references and work with parrot owners in any way possible.

Is Second Flight a facility?
No, it is not. Second Flight is in the home of Leanne and Don Travis. Although we are hoping to raise enough money and get enough sponsors to open a large facility that would be incorporated into their home.. We strive on keeping Second Flight as part of Leanne and Don's home to ensure that someone is there 24/7 to care for the parrots who may be ill or injured. We hope to open a facility that will have a home environment, that can house many parrots, have a larger quarantine area, nursery, educational room where we can have education programs and where the public can attend on a regular basis.

Does anyone receive a salary?
We are run solely by volunteers. That includes traveling to homes to do home visits, to offer advice for parrot owners and so on and so forth. Many of our directors and members help with home visits at their own expense . And we thank them.

Do you have to live near Orillia to volunteer?
We have volunteers province/nation wide who work hard to raise awareness of our organization. Many have offered to help raise funds, help at events, post posters and more.

I sent in an application but have not heard about any parrots available for adoption, why?
Quite simply, because you may not have visited with one of the directors or volunteers at Second Flight. It is YOUR responsibility to do so and once this is done it is your responsibility to join our forum for t hose approved to find up to date information on birds that may be available for adoption.

How many calls and emails are received a month?
As our popularity increases we are receiving more and more calls per month. Currently we are seeing an average of 2 parrots a WEEK come to Second Flight, and 10-15 calls per day from individuals nation wide.
